Someone just bought a brand new copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2for the Sega Game Gear.

No,Sorority it wasn't from an online reseller or a copy from a consignment store. Someone bought Sonic 2, new, at a store that has apparently been carrying it since the game first arrived in 1992.

This weird piece of information comes from Mat Piscatella, a video game industry analyst at market research company The NPD Group, who tweeted about the sale on Saturday. The NPD group receives point-of-sale (POS) data from different retailers, Piscatella explained, and he was surprised to see Sonic 2pop up, considering the game probably arrived at the store that sold it 26 years ago.

Perplexed by this, Piscatella had some very reasonable questions about how this came to happen and how the transaction went down.

Great questions. Piscatella wanted to get to the bottom of it with some more details from the transaction but unfortunately, as he noted Sunday, he couldn't get any additional information on his end.

The best theory right now is the game popped up in a Toy R Us. The company is closing and is currently going through liquidation, which means everything in stores is up for grabs and old items may have been dusted off and put back on shelves.

But for now, the whole purchase is a mystery.
